Vintage NW Persian Village Rug with Menagerie Motifs

  • Likely Meshginshahr district, c. 1980 | 5’ 1” × 9’ (155 × 275 cm)

A brilliant tomato-red field forms the stage for one of the most charming village weaves we have handled in some time.  At the center sits a stepped cruciform medallion whose layers shift from apricot gold to lilac to green, each tier edged by a neat ram’s-horn outline.  Corner spandrels pick up the same violet and emerald notes, creating an almost patchwork frame that energizes the whole composition.

Look closer and you will find a lively cast: goats, grazing deer, perched birds, and tiny houses, all scattered between geometric blossoms and abstract trees.  The animals are drawn with the naïve confidence typical of Northwest Persian village looms, yet they are spaced with real design intelligence so the field never feels crowded.

A sage and ochre border filled with latch-hook diamonds and stylised flowers encloses the scene. Pile is medium-high, the cotton foundation keeps everything firm underfoot, and the rug has been professionally washed so it is ready for daily life.

Where it shines

  • In a creative studio or home office where its menagerie sparks conversation

  • At the foot of a child’s bed, introducing folk art without feeling juvenile

  • In a boho living room layered over jute for colour and warmth

A joyful village weave that balances strong geometry with playful storytelling, perfect for anyone who loves rugs that refuse to take themselves too seriously.
